Vocational & Life Skills

Mission
Give people hands-on skills they can use to earn a living and manage daily life.
Vision
Households that can support themselves through their own work.

Not everyone wants an office job. Many people want a trade they can practise with their hands and start earning from quickly. This programme teaches practical skills that are in demand in Kampala and in the settlements.

Skills we teach

Training depends on the intake and on what local markets need. It has included:

  • Tailoring
  • Fashion and design
  • Hair styling
  • Crafts and bead making
  • Liquid soap making
  • Farming and food processing

Life skills

Alongside the trade, learners cover the skills that help them keep going:

  • Saving and managing money
  • Planning a week and keeping time
  • Working in a team and solving problems
  • Looking after their health and wellbeing

From training to income

Since 2021, women trained by YAREN in liquid soap making have gone on to run their own small soap businesses. We use the same approach in every trade: learn the skill, practise it, then sell what you make.
